The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical biological terror, but within Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.
