They're Doing to America What They Did to Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and characteristic occasions – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of several weeks, the American president started showing all observers his designs for a gilded ballroom twice the size of the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to build it.

He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the current estimate of casualties due to his slashing to international aid amounts to 600,000 and growing, and presently a study forecast his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have attempted – truly, no previous leader would have imagined – solo demolishing significant portions of the White House in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which have business with the government.

We went from 'the humble will receive the planet' toward 'the humble will perish to cholera'

As bewildering as it is to watch the leader try to upend the traditional concept of democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have watched throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of compassion into an icon of hate who endorses exactly the harshness that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more slowly, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my upbringing, since in theory Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and given that the fastest-growing cadre among Americans may possess limited understanding about him because they identify as skeptics or uncertain individuals or nones. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of significant worth in the Christian story.

It is emphatically not the narrative of an authoritative monarch arising; instead, a baby is born to displaced parents in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to evade secret police. The infant develops in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his teaching focuses on affection for fellow humans, especially for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and protecting. Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the other cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a method to educate the attacker; his method regarding offenses is that if someone steals your coat you should give them your pullover also.

The apparent and straightforward fact that the Jesus of the gospels requests a type of radical love focused on the poor has consistently rendered Christianity rather a scandalous religion: engaging for the populace, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be contained. In the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestantism was so prevalent that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.

A Struggle for the Finest Among Us

Therefore I have felt heartened to witness the determined opposition regarding Trump emerge during the previous year. It has provided significant comfort to participate in developing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired citizens to turn out in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags throughout each rally and calls to the highest qualities within national heritage.

We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you receive him and receive them or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, through connection to the finest in US heritage, just as Christianity is most protected by reference to what makes it distinctive and wonderful, specifically the model of Christ. In all circumstances does it suggest acting as if the worst of both America and religious tradition was nonexistent; it represents both modesty and faith, a mixture that genuine American Christians should embrace.
